As the cold of December rolled in and we prepared for the holiday rush, excited readers filed into Mrs. Kelley’s room to learn the titles for the 6th Annual Battle of the Books competition. As in the past, teams were given just 6 months to read a dozen books. Throughout that time, they met with high school mentors to discuss strategies and evaluate one another’s reading progress. The exciting mini-battles were held during the first weeks of May. As a result of the mini-battle scores, two teams moved on to the Grand Battle: Team Bwhaa Talking Cactuses and Team Bye. On Friday, May 16th, middle school students in grades 6 – 8 gathered in the auditorium for a well-matched competition. During the battle, teams were able to utilize a different life-line during each round. They could ask a student from another team to answer (ask an expert), they could poll a grade level of their choosing, or they could take away 2 possible choices on a multiple choice question, leaving them with a 50/50 chance. Points were scored evenly for most of the match, but a few crucial steals made the difference. In the end, the Bwhaa Talking Cactuses were victorious with a score of 103 and in 2nd place was Team Bye with a score of 84. Each member of the winning team received a gift card to Barnes and Noble. The members of the second place team received book marks. All participants received a special commemorative certificate. Once again, this year’s participants impressed everyone with their literary knowledge and unwavering dedication. A giant “thank you” goes out to Mrs. Kelley once again for organizing and executing this awesome opportunity for the students of F-P! - Mrs. Pollard & Mrs. Lang
