Communities Kickin' Cancer - A Fall Tradition in Our Community

Contributed by Brenda Zook, Communities Kickin' Cancer Board Member

The fall of 2020 was a season of disappointment. Our fifth annual Communities Kickin’ Cancer event was not able to take place due to the ongoing pandemic and concerns of gathering together. The Fabius-Pompey and Tully soccer teams, especially our seniors, missed out playing the “game of the year,” and both communities missed the gathering of two great teams on Route 80 in southern Onondaga County.

Fast forward – August 2021 we received great news. We’re Back! The sixth annual Communities Kickin’ Cancer event was a go. The Planning Committee gathered quickly and shared concerns about what this event would look like this year with such a short turn around for fundraising and securing in-kind donations. However, collectively it was decided that this event will be what it will be and we would put forth our best efforts!

Our communities and beyond did not fail us! Every individual and corporate sponsor who donated raised their donation level this year; our tee shirt sales became advance tee shirt orders and were sold out — first time ever! We received many in-kind donations of paper products, assorted candy and chips, hot dogs, rolls, macaroni & cheese, pulled pork, chili, pretzels, pizza and much much more – all to keep the expenses down for a greater donation to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital! In addition, our sidelines crowd was larger than ever!

Thank you to both the Fabius-Pompey and Tully communities and beyond for your continued support of this great event and continuing the tradition of friendly competition with a soccer game in the fall on Route 80.
Thanks to ALL of YOU, we presented a check for $13,000 to the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. This makes our total donations over $50,000 to date. Thank YOU!

The Communities Kickin’ Cancer event is volunteer-driven, which includes parents of soccer players in both communities, coaches and many community individuals. We need your help to keep this event going for future soccer players. Volunteers play many different roles in the pre-event, day-of-event and post-event activities. Should you be interested in assisting with next year’s event, please contact us through our Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/Communities-Kickin-Cancer.
