Fabius-Pompey Student Athletes Participate in Leadership Academy
by Cait Smith, Physical Education teacher and coach
The Leadership Academy is specifically designed for student-athletes in Section III. Participants will explore curriculum modules throughout the program including: Adversity, Character, Sportsmanship, Attitude, Courage, Being a good Role Model, and much more! Eight Student-Athletes and 4 Coaches from Fabius-Pompey attended a meeting at Cortland high school, where they started to participate in leadership training. One of the goals of the group was to start a project at Fabius-Pompey that will be sustainable and will benefit our school or community. The Student-Athletes chose to help increase participation in Recreation sports by getting high school athletes more involved in the sports program, as well as getting Recreation athletes more involved with high school sports.
The Fabius-Pompey Leadership Academy group started the first part of this project on Thursday, November 15 with promoting our youth Basketball program. Our group talked and participated in our elementary school PE classes to help out as well as talk about our boys and girls basketball programs. The group took 10 minutes to talk to all of our elementary students about some of their experiences in Rec. sports and how much it helped them become who they are. After they talked, they helped lead lessons for the day and played different basketball skill games with the students to help spark their interest. The day was a success. Our elementary students enjoyed their time with the group and well as had fun.
