Volunteer Program Information
Barbara McKenney, Volunteer Coordinator
Welcome to a new, exciting school year at Fabius-Pompey! I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. If you are interested in volunteering this year, as a one-time commitment or on an ongoing basis, I can always use your help. If you have never filled out a volunteer form for my file, they are available on the school website, in the Elementary School office, the High School office or can be sent home with your child upon request. For liability and safety reasons, it is imperative that all volunteers have a form on file before volunteering. If you completed one in a previous year, you should receive a letter from me soon, verifying that I submitted your name to the Board of Education for approval for the 2017-2018 school year.
To start the school year, we will need nine or ten volunteers to help with our Grandparents’ Day Breakfasts. This year, breakfast will be served two days, Wednesday, September 13, and Thursday, September 14. You’ll need to be at school by 7:45 a.m. and should be finished by 8:45 a.m. We need help with the serving line on both days.
This year we will hold our eleventh annual 10th Grade Fall Clean-Up Day on Thursday, October 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (rain date of Thursday, October 19). It will run like our 9th Grade Volunteer Day, so I will need twenty-some volunteers to chaperone small groups of 10th graders as we clean up the fall foliage.
We always need volunteers to help in the classrooms, the libraries and the Reading and Math Centers. Chaperones are needed throughout the school year for field trips, band trips, chorus trips and nature walks around the village. We will be looking for volunteers to help with the Enrichment Clusters from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays at the Elementary School. If you have a suggestion for a new cluster, please contact me.
The 8th graders will be participating in their Community Service Project again this year. We are always looking for volunteer opportunities for them, so if you need extra hands with a community service project, please remember to call my office with sufficient notice that I can find 8th graders who will be willing to help you with your project.
We have scheduled our 11th Grade Career Fair for Friday, December 1, and our Middle School Career Fair for Friday, May 4. We will need twenty-some volunteers on each day to come in half a day, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and speak to our 11th graders on the first date, or our 7th and 8th graders on the second date, about their career fields. If you love your job and are interested in this exciting program, designed to expose our students to some options in the working world today, please contact me. We are always looking for new speakers.
Check our school website under the Volunteer section for upcoming volunteer opportunities. Some tentative dates for the 2017-2018 school year are the 5th Grade Ski Trip to Toggenburg on Friday, January 26 (snow/rain/ice date of Friday, February 2), the 5th Grade Wellness Workshop on Friday, March 9, and the 9th Grade Volunteer Day on Thursday, May 17 (rain date of Thursday, May 24). Other activities to watch for are the fall, winter and spring picnics at the Middle School-High School, Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Celebration, the Inside Outside Tea and the Fun Day at the Elementary School. I will try to post the dates for these and other volunteering activities on the website as soon as I get them.
