Battle of the Books Goes Regional

F-P Battle of the Books Goes Regional

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3-8. The purpose is to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers.  Fabius-Pompey 5-8th grade students came together to read 10 books of different genres. They met as teams weekly the past 5 months and quizzes each other along with student coaches in grades 9 and 10.  On April 5 the 5th and 6th grade teams battled in the auditorium against each other to correctly answer the most amount of questions on their books. Picture the Olympics of Reading! Reading is not just an individual sport anymore!

Mrs. Kelley and Ms. Turner were excited to change up the battles to go beyond just our own Fabius-Pompey.  OCMBOCES sponsored the regional tournament and the winners from the district battles went to Liverpool OCMBOCES to compete against other schools.  We represented at the 5th and 6th and the 7th and 8th grade level. This required a collaboration between the Elementary School and Middle School. A huge thank you to all involved in making this a smooth collaboration.

It was a tough battle at both competitions.  At the 7th and 8th grade battle, Grace Swanson, Natasha DiRienzo, Maddy Hutson, and Claire Widdekind, claimed 4th place!  They worked extremely hard and crammed right up until the first questions was read. They represented Fabius-Pompey well.

Going into the battle the 5th and 6th grade team Devils vs. Angels (Ryan Britschge, Domenic Angello, Addy Curtis, Kiara Fralick) felt confident with their coaches Sasha Lelakowski and Cassie Skeele attending to cheer them on.  All of the 5th and 6th grade teams were in attendance to cheer! The first two questions went fantastic then the heat was on. Ryan Britschge felt a question had an incorrect answer and challenged it!  Although they were unsuccessful in the challenge they showed their confidence and teamwork. They were the first team to challenge any question in the competition!

It was a fantastic competition and all the teams cannot wait until next year.  The book lists will be out in June and we look forward to winning the trophy next year!
