SPEECH DEVELOPMENT

 

Speech is the oral production of sounds, involving breath control, voice production, articulation (use of lips, teeth, tongue and palate), rate, and fluency.

 

WHEN DO SPEECH SOUNDS DEVELOP?

 

There is a wide range for normal speech sound development. The ages listed below should provide you with a general idea of the upper limits for each of the speech sounds.  If a child is not producing the sounds correctly by these ages, there MAY be a need for special help.

 

            By age 3 ½  …………….all vowels, p, b, m, t, d, n, ng, h, w

 

            By age 5 ……………….k, g, f, v, y

 

By age 7………………..voiceless th (as in thin), voiced th (as in the), sh, ch, zh

    (as in measure), j, l, r, s, z
