June 2009 Summer Reading - Strategies for the Parent Summer is a wonderful opportunity to make reading fun and instructive. Here are a few suggestions to keep your children reading throughout the summer - · Select content that is interesting - give them information on a trip you are planning and have them suggest some activities, try comic books or graphic novels, or read through the project or new game directions before getting started, plan a meal by finding new recipes in cookbooks. · Teaching is done through the school year. Instead, support their reading by enjoying Read Alouds together throughout the summer months. · Read whatever you see together, whether it is interpretive signs at the museum or zoo, sightseeing, etc. Leave the children little notes around the house or have them create the grocery list for the week. · Remember to always have reading materials with you when you travel about, even when waiting in lines or in traffic · Use the library regularly over the summer to check out books. Audio books are a great alternative for car trips! · Be a model of reading - share stories from the newspaper about current events, interesting articles from magazines or funny/relevant sections from your current reading material. Children can often make connections to something they've read or seen. Reading can be a wonderful way to spend the summer - new adventures and new information.
